Success on a plate: Emily cooks up a winning treat

FINBOROUGH School pupil Emily Rudd definitely found the recipe for success at the Rotary Young Chef 2010 district final – she was a clear winner!

Emily Rudd, 14, was competing against seven other youngsters from Suffolk, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire, in a contest open to students of 17 or under.

She now goes on to compete in a regional final to be held in London later this month, with the hope of making it through to the national final of the contest in April.

The Rotary Young Chef competition challenges youngsters to prepare, cook and serve a healthy three-course meal for two on a budget of £14 – the idea is to develop food presentational and cooking skills, while also coping with a demanding situation.

S3 (Senior 3) pupil Emily cooked up a real treat for judges: goats cheese and beetroot stack, followed by seared sea bass with rosemary-scented mussels, rounded off by plum and marzipan tart.

“We are so proud of Emily. She was the youngest contestant in the competition and she just took everything in her stride, showing maturity beyond her years,” said James Sinclair, Principal of Finborough School, the independent day and boarding school near Stowmarket. “We wish her every success in the next round of the competition.”

The district final was held at West Suffolk College in Bury St Edmunds. In the regional final, on 20 March at Westminster Kingsway College, London, Emily will be competing against students from North London, Essex and Bucks, Beds and Herts Rotary districts.

Emily is studying Food Technology as part of Finborough’s senior school curriculum and will no doubt be making it one of her choices when she starts studying for in September!
