Learning Support
The majority of pupils at Finborough School do not require any additional learning support. However for those pupils who need a little extra help and for those with dyslexia Finborough School is committed to providing learning support and has a dyslexia unit recognised by ‘The Council for the Registration of Schools Teaching Dyslexic Pupils’.
At Finborough School we aim to identify dyslexia at the earliest opportunity and to ensure that specialist teaching enables each pupil to reach their maximum potential.
Most pupils in need of learning support have not made the same progress as others and therefore have developed low confidence and have little self esteem. At Finborough School, we aim to improve each pupil`s confidence and thereby allow them to increase their self esteem. This is achieved through close liaison between pupil, teachers and parents.
At Finborough School all teachers are sympathetic to the problems which their pupils have and differentiate within the classroom appropriately.
The majority of pupils requiring learning support receive one to one tuition, but in some cases it is appropriate for the tuition of younger pupils to be in pairs. As far as possible, all lessons are taken at the time best suited to that particular pupil. Lessons are of 40 minutes and most pupils have between one and three lessons each week.
Teaching is mainly by structured multi-sensory methods that are cumulative. The emphasis is on confidence-building, so that each pupil achieves maximum success by working at an appropriate pace which allows them to reinforce and consolidate their learning, whilst also gaining experience with new achievements.
The initial assessment on entry determines the starting point for each pupil and progress is assessed regularly through dictations and comprehension exercises.
Pupils are encouraged to self-assess their work and to set targets for improvement. Each term all pupils have an Individual Learning Plan, jointly written with their Learning Support Tutor. The targets agreed are again discussed at the end of term, when new targets are considered for the future.
As the pupil approaches course work related to G.C.S.E. more emphasis is placed on study skills, revision and exam techniques.
At the end of each term a report is sent to the parents and there is an opportunity for it to be fully discussed. This will include the results of any testing that has been done.
Learning support is fully integrated into the school and we are proud to say there is no stigma attached to pupils who have additional support.
