Senior School Curriculum
At Finborough School, in the Senior School we aim to provide a broad and balanced curriculum that follows the National Curriculum in S1, S2 and S3. In S4 and S5 we follow GCSE courses and in the 6th form we follow A level courses.
In the S1 to S3 years English, Maths and Science are at the core of the curriculum and get proportionately the greatest amount of curriculum time. French, Spanish, History, Geography, ICT, Art, Music and Home Economics are taught to all pupils together with PSHE, RE and a unique Life Skills programme.
Throughout the S4-S5 years we divide the curriculum into two broad areas – Core Subjects and Option Subjects.
The Core Subjects are Maths, English, and Science and these are studied by all pupils. As well as English, all pupils are able to take English Literature. Within the Science curriculum pupils have the opportunity to take one, two or three GCSE qualifications.
The option subjects are French, Spanish (most students are expected to choose one foreign language), ICT, Art, Music, History, Geography, Home Economics and Physical Education. Students choose four of these.
The majority of students complete their S5 year with between 8 and 10 GCSE qualifications.
At Sixth Form level we offer A levels in French, Maths, English Literature, History, Geography, Art, Physical Education, Business Studies, Music and ICT. We are looking to add others. Most students will select four subjects to study at AS level in the lower sixth. In the upper sixth some may reduce the number of subjects to three to study at A2 level. In addition all Sixth formers do an AS in Critical Thinking and participate in an innovative and unique Life Skills Programme.
Throughout the senior school years we also offer a comprehensive Enrichment Programme that allows pupils to participate in various activities or in some cases in doing extra subjects.
