Art

The main aim of the Art Department at Finborough School is to inspire a lifelong enjoyment of art and culture. Students are taught to develop technical skills, as well as how to think and solve problems in a creative and imaginative way.

From the Prep School to S3, students are introduced to a wide variety of art and crafts from different times and cultures, and throughout the year will develop drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, ceramics and ICT skills. Students are taught for a double period each week, which consists of one hour and twenty minutes.

Students who opt to study Art and Design at G.C.S.E. level follow the Edexcel examination syllabus. During this course students learn to understand contexts in Art and Design and to develop and explore ideas using a variety of media in two and three dimensions, sometimes incorporating ICT. They learn to modify and refine work as it progresses, and finally present a personal response, realizing their intentions and showing connections with the work of other artists. Students are taught for two double periods each week, which amount to two hours and forty minutes, as well as being expected to spend a considerable amount of time on independent work outside the lesson. Candidates have to submit two coursework projects and an examination project culminating in a ten-hour examination.

For Art and Design at A Level, the aim is to develop the ability to appreciate and respond to the visual world in a personal and creative way. The skills which students  develop are varied, and determined by the areas of study they choose, which include drawing, painting, sculpture, photography and ICT. Finborough School follows the O.C.R. A Level examination syllabus, and students have to produce two large coursework projects and two examination projects, culminating in a five-hour examination at A.S. Level and a fifteen- hour examination at A2 Level. Students are taught for approximately 6 hours per week and are expected to put in a considerable amount of independent study. A Level students have their own Art studio with a designated space.

Finborough School Art Department organizes regular trips to Art galleries and museums, both in the local area and in London, as well as annual study trips abroad. Recent Art trip destinations were Barcelona in October 2008, Rome in April 2008 and Amsterdam in May 2007. Finborough School hosts the annual Independent Schools’ Association regional Art competition and exhibition in November, with schools from all over the East of England participating and attending the exhibition evening. The various clubs run by the Art Department after school are always very popular with students.
