Montessori Nursery
The Montessori method is a child centered form of education that enables every child to become independent, both personally and socially. Montessori is characterised by an emphasis on self-directed activity on the part of the child. Finborough School's Montessori classroom provides an atmosphere that is pleasant and attractive, to allow the children to learn at their own pace and interact with others in a natural and peaceful environment. The materials used in the classroom are produced specifically for the children and made of ‘real’ materials such as wood and glass. All the Montessori equipment is laid out in a deliberate order on low shelves that are easily accessible. The equipment is aesthetically pleasing, and meticulously cared for by both the children and staff.
Children between the ages of 2 and 5 often work together; the younger children learn from observing the older children and the older ones benefit by helping the younger children. The mixed age group allows the children to develop socially, intellectually and emotionally.
The curriculum is divided into five main areas: Practical Life, Sensorial, Mathematics, Language, and Cultural:
Practical Life - This gives the children the opportunity to practise the skills of everyday life, and also helps them to develop concentration and refine hand-eye co-ordination.
Sensorial - These exercises capitalise on the fact that children use their senses to learn. Through use of the materials they are encouraged to order and classify the physical properties of the world in which they live.
Mathematics - The apparatus for this area helps the children to learn and understand mathematical concepts. Early numeracy work, addition and subtraction, are presented using the concrete materials that Maria Montessori designed herself.
Language – This includes listening, speaking, reading and writing. The children are actively encouraged to participate in group and class discussions, therefore developing their self-confidence and self-esteem. In preparation for reading and writing, the children are introduced to the phonetic alphabet by the use of Sandpaper Letters, then progress onto word building and early reading schemes.
Cultural – This area covers Geography, History, Biology, Art and Music. Our school setting also offers an amazing outdoor environment for the children to play and explore. We go on regular nature walks to the local woodland area and surrounding countryside.
