Rugby School Report 21st September 2014
In 1823 at Rugby School, while playing in a football match, William Webb Ellis made history by picking up the ball and running with it, thus inventing the game of Rugby as we know it. On Sunday 21st September 2014, the Finborough School under 11’s rugby team made their own little bit of history for the school, playing in a 7’s Rugby Tournament on that very same grass at Rugby School.
Players (Benji, Euan, Will, Jacob, Matthew D, Woody, Matthew G, Theo and Louie) parents and staff were all excited and up for the challenge, the school and the grounds were a perfect setting for the day. We started our first match against Ashford School and although we started slowly, narrowly lost the game by 3 tries to 1. This turned out to be a good result, as Ashford School went on to win the whole tournament.
Unfortunately things didn’t quite go the way we wanted after that. Losing Louie with concussion, the team battled on bravely narrowly losing to The Perse School 7-10. It wasn’t to be our day but everyone left with great memories of playing at the home of rugby and gained a lot from the experience. Louie, Benji and Jacob will never forget scoring tries on the hallowed turf and next year we’ll be back! Man of the Tournament: Matthew Graham.
