Duathlon First at Finborough
I am delighted to share with you a great sporting opportunity for Finborough pupils.
On Friday 28th April 2017 we will be holding a Junior Duathlon. The event will be separated into 4 age groups all with staggered start times across the afternoon;
U9 Year 3 &4 12.30
U11 Year 5 &6 1.30
U13 Year 7 &8 2.30
U15 Year 9 &10 3.30
A Duathlon consists of 3 stages; firstly, running before a changeover to cycling and ending with a final running leg.
Due to the nature of the event it’ll be held outside but kept within the Finborough School grounds with no road crossings. For safety reasons this is a good weather event. If we are forecast to suffer inclement weather on Friday 28th April the event will be cancelled, this decision will be taken on Thursday 27th April and shared with all parents with Friday 5th May provisionally scheduled as the backup date.
Everyone participating will be expected to bring their own bikes and helmets, which must be worn whilst on the cycling leg and during transition. All bikes may be dropped off on the morning of Friday 28th April, there will be marshals out to make sure all bikes are placed in the correct age categorised area. There will be an appropriate number of marshals placed around the course, who will be a mixture of volunteers from both the sixth form and teaching staff.
This event is a fundraiser so there with an entrance fee of £12 per pupil. During the summer holidays I will be spending two weeks volunteering in a hospital in the less developed areas of the Dominican Republic to gain further medical experience to support my application to study medicine from September 2018. I am working hard to achieve this aspiration and want to ensure I have left no stone unturned in my pursuit of experiences that will strengthen my application alongside my academic achievements.
The money raised through this event will go alongside my ‘Crowd Funding’ page found at, https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/phoebeparkerGAPMEDIC17 to support me with this opportunity and hopefully raise much needed funds for ‘The Dream Project’, an education charity based and founded in the Dominican Republic which focuses on their “theory of change”, centered on supporting children and youth through a multi stage development plan to give young learners the best chance of escaping poverty.
We are confident this event will be a great success and will hopefully become an annual event for the school. For this to happen though we need all the support we can get from the pupils to hopefully have a huge turnout. Parents are more than welcome to come along to support their children and the event across Friday afternoon.
Please reply via email to the school office to register your child for this event and state your preferred payment method for the £12 entrance fee.
We hope to present all children with a memento of their participation in Finborough’s first Duathlon and most importantly ensure that they have great fun taking part in a different kind of sporting event.
I look forward to your child’s entry, participation and also to sharing with you my medical experience overseas after the summer holiday.
