Senior Squads in Tignes for Apex Rugby Perform Better Camp

In the last week of the holidays thirty-six students from our boys senior rugby squads accompanied by six Finborough coaches headed out to be part of an Apex Rugby Perform Better Camp, hosted by Apex 2100, a professional sports training facility situated in the stunning alpine resort of Tignes.  The camps, developed with Apex Professionals, Director of Sport Sir Clive Woodward and former GB Rugby Sevens Captain Tom Mitchell, run for 7 days with different schools attending together.

Finborough were in residence with Millfield School, which provided both squads with excellent opportunities for pre-season competitive opposition, as well as allowing them to experience the countless benefits of collaborative expertise and fresh approaches.

The boys and coaches took full advantage of the shared training experience under the expert leadership of the Apex 2100 team, who presented educational sessions on nutrition, visual awareness and player psychology.  The intensive period in camp was an amazing experience for the squad.

Head of Rugby Mitch Turner said “The time together in camp was of huge benefit to the players.  It helped to break down any new relationship barriers with the boys that were new to Finborough, as well as allowing everyone to come together and find their place in the group, to feel they belong and therefore work better together.

It also supported our players to further develop their values as well as grow their understanding of what’s needed on the pitch and how best to deliver it.”

Finborough 1st XV captain Harry Price said “It was absolutely incredible, great for the team.  Going up against a competitive big rugby school like Millfield was amazing and the Apex staff were brilliant, so much knowledge gained from them.”

Jacob Champness-Wallis who joined only this term added “It was a truly fantastic experience, the staff were really good at getting us all involved with one another. Considering I’m new to the school, I felt really included and like we bonded so well together as a team.  It really was an experience so worth taking part in, the site and facilities were incredible.”

Whilst Finborough were in camp, they worked directly with Great British Olympian Tom Mitchell.  The coaches also took part in a virtual call with Sir Clive Wooodward, to help us understand how he approached the planning and implementation of his game plan and player leadership in the lead up to the 2003 Rugby World Cup of which they emerged victorious.
