What makes Finborough Sixth Form the best choice in Suffolk: A Message from the Headmaster

What makes Finborough different to other options in Suffolk?

Personal, Nurturing and Grounded in Character

As Headmaster of Finborough School, I often speak with families navigating the important decision of where their children should continue their education after Year 11.  Suffolk is fortunate to have a wide range of sixth forms and further education providers, many of them large and academically focused.  Yet time and again, parents and students tell me that what they truly seek is something more personal, more nurturing and more grounded in character.  It is precisely this environment that our Sixth Form at Finborough is proud to offer.

A Smaller, More Personal Sixth Form Where Every Student Matters

One of the greatest strengths of Finborough Sixth Form is our intentionally small size.  In contrast to the much larger FE colleges and sixth forms across the county, we provide a learning environment where every student is genuinely known.  My colleagues and I take great care to understand each individual’s aspirations, strengths and needs.

We avoid the culture of academic hot-housing that can create unnecessary pressure. Instead, we focus on steady, supported growth, helping young people develop confidence, resilience and a genuine love of learning.  When students feel seen and supported, academic success follows naturally.

Individual Pathways Supported by Exceptional Staff

Our Sixth Form offers a broad range of A-levels and vocational courses, as outlined on our website, enabling students to craft personalised pathways that reflect their interests and future ambitions.  Whether a student is passionate about the sciences, creative arts, business, humanities, sport or a blended approach, we work closely with them to design a programme that fits.

For students aspiring to pursue a professional sports career, we provide tailored support that integrates seamlessly with their academic programme.  Personalised guidance around training schedules, conditioning and dietary needs ensures that athletes can develop at an elite level while continuing to thrive in their studies.

Because our class sizes are smaller, our teachers are able to provide individual guidance on a daily basis.  This is a level of care and flexibility that is difficult for larger institutions to match, and it makes a profound difference to each student’s experience.

Character Education at the Heart of Everything We Do

What truly marks Finborough out is our unwavering commitment to character education.  Academic qualifications open doors, but character determines how confidently and effectively a young person walks through them.

We teach and integrate the principles of Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People – a framework that helps students become proactive, reflective, emotionally intelligent and collaborative.  These habits are not an occasional lesson; they are woven into daily life, forming a foundation for leadership, personal responsibility and success well beyond school.

Facilities

State-of-the-Art Facilities That Inspire Ambition

Although we are a smaller sixth form, our facilities rival those found in much larger settings.  Students learn, create and train in an environment designed to inspire ambition and excellence:

All of these spaces are available to students without the competition for access common in bigger colleges.  What’s more, our boarding houses have recently undergone a comprehensive refurbishment, offering boarders a true home from home environment equipped with modern facilities and personal spaces to complete their studies.

Developing Leadership and Resilience Through the Duke of Edinburgh Programme

I am proud that every Sixth Form student at Finborough has the opportunity to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award.  The programme builds leadership, teamwork, resilience and adventure; all qualities that stand alongside academic study as essential components of a well-rounded education.

A Sixth Form That Values the Whole Person

Finborough Sixth Form is more than an academic pathway; it is a community where young people grow into capable, compassionate and confident adults.  We combine personalised learning, outstanding facilities and a deep commitment to character.  This is what sets us apart from other post-16 options across Suffolk, and it is why so many families choose the Finborough journey.

I look forward to welcoming the next cohort of Sixth Form students and helping them become the very best versions of themselves.
