Spanish Pen Pals Bring Language Learning to Life
This term, Finborough School’s Year 8 students have been taking part in an exciting international pen pal scheme with a partner school just outside Seville, Spain. Launched last term as part of their Spanish studies, the project reached a particularly special milestone this week as pupils received their very first letters in return.
The excitement in the classroom was clear as students opened envelopes and discovered messages written by pupils of a similar age, living and learning in a different country. For many, this was the first time they had communicated directly with someone from abroad.
The pen pal scheme plays a valuable role in supporting students’ learning in Spanish. Writing to a real audience encourages pupils to apply their language skills in a practical and authentic way, moving beyond textbooks and exercises. Students carefully considered vocabulary, grammar and sentence structure to ensure their letters were clear and engaging, while also gaining exposure to natural, everyday Spanish through the replies they received.
Reading letters written by native Spanish speakers helps pupils develop their comprehension skills and builds confidence in understanding the language as it is used in real life. It also highlights the importance of communication as a two‑way process, reinforcing the idea that languages are tools for connection, not just subjects studied in the classroom.
As the scheme continues, pupils will build ongoing relationships with their pen pals, strengthening their confidence in written Spanish.
