Finborough U16 Football Team Crowned Schools County Cup Final Champions
On Tuesday the Finborough U16 football team returned victorious from the Suffolk Schools County Cup Final against Copleston School, held at Needham Market FC.
Having progressed through all the previous stages, the boys had been training hard, preparing for the match which they approached with determination and a strong desire to come out on top. The team was made up of Year 11 students along with four talented Year 10s playing up an age group.
At half time Finborough was 1-0 up, but Copleston equalised early in the second half. Both teams had chances but our goalie fought off some strong attempts to score which resulted in a penalty shoot out.
Team captain Charlie said ‘It was a close match. We really came together as a team and the boys showed great resilience, holding their nerve through penalties. We were grateful for a really uplifting and supportive crowd. This victory is really exciting for Finborough Football, I think we’re ascending as a football team and as a school.’
Finborough Football Coach, Ian Millar added ‘The boys performed really well against a physical Copleston team. They were under constant pressure in the second half but didn’t allow this to effect their focus. They were defensively outstanding and their performance was topped off by an exceptional double penalty save by our goalie.’
This was an excellent way to end the season and demonstrates to our younger players the rewards of hard work, team work and a commitment to your sport.
