The Montessori method is a child centered form of education that enables every child to become independent, both personally and socially. Montessori is characterised by an emphasis on self-directed activity on the part of the child. Finborough School’s Montessori classroom, which was rated as outstanding at our last inspection, provides an atmosphere that is pleasant and attractive, to allow the children to learn at their own pace and interact with others in a natural and peaceful environment. The materials used in the classroom are produced specifically for the children and made of ‘real’ materials such as wood and glass. All the Montessori equipment is laid out in a deliberate order on low shelves that are easily accessible. The equipment is aesthetically pleasing, and meticulously cared for by both the children and staff.
Staff led and directed activities, which are carefully planned around the children’s interests and abilities, provide a teaching opportunity that aids optimal learning opportunities.
