Baroness Bull Inspires Pupils in ‘Learn with the Lords’ Session at Finborough
Today Finborough School had the honour of welcoming Baroness Deborah Bull for an engaging Learn with the Lords session attended by pupils from Year 6 through Year 13. The event offered a fascinating insight into the workings of the House of Lords and her experience as a Lord.
Baroness Bull began by sharing her remarkable journey from a celebrated ballet dancer with the Royal Ballet for 20 years to leadership roles at the Royal Opera House and King’s College London, before being appointed as a crossbench peer, meaning she does not belong to any political party. Her unique background in the performing arts provided pupils with an inspiring example of how diverse experiences can lead to influential roles in public life.
The session was packed with curiosity and lively discussion, as pupils asked fantastic questions about the history of women joining the House of Lords, the difference between MPs and Lords, and what changes Baroness Bull would make if she were in government. They explored whether her first experiences in the Lords were stressful, how she prepares and rehearses speeches, and her views on VAT on private schools. Pupils also delved into how often laws are rejected, the role of rules, conventions, and bishops, and whether she had ever faced discrimination as a woman in her role.
Baroness Bull emphasised the importance of preparation and rehearsal in delivering speeches and navigating parliamentary debates, offering pupils practical advice on confidence and resilience. The session sparked thoughtful discussion and gave pupils a deeper understanding of the UK’s legislative process, as well as the values of perseverance and adaptability.
