Future Engineers in Action: Inside Finborough’s VEX Robotics Programme

VEX Robotics continues to be a popular and growing part of STEM learning at Finborough School. Pupils work together to design, build and code their robots, gaining practical experience in programming, problem‑solving and engineering. Each team takes responsibility for different elements of their robot, which encourages collaboration and clear communication.

This year’s VEX challenge is already well under way. Teams are learning the rules and working out effective strategies, testing ideas and adapting their approach as they go. Students are now focused on refining their robot design ahead of the February competition, making small adjustments and practising together to give their alliances the best possible chance of scoring well.

Finborough has a strong track record in VEX Robotics. In 2023, one of our teams qualified for the international finals and travelled to Texas to compete – a milestone that continues to motivate our current pupils.

The programme also supports wider skills that matter beyond STEM. Pupils build resilience, learn how to work as a team and develop creative ways to tackle challenges. Most importantly, they enjoy seeing their ideas come to life in a practical, fast‑paced environment.

Our next group of young engineers will get their first taste of robotics at a Year 6 STEAM event after half term, where they will be introduced to the basics of VEX and what the programme involves.

What is VEX?

VEX

VEX Robotics is an educational robotics platform created by Innovation First International, designed to give young people hands‑on experience across key STEM subjects. It offers a range of tools, components and programming opportunities that help students develop real engineering and problem‑solving skills. Alongside the classroom element, VEX also includes a global competition programme run by the Robotics Education & Competition Foundation (RECF), where teams design, build and compete with their robots against others. Together, the platform and the competitions provide an exciting and accessible introduction to the world of robotics.
