In today’s world, knowledge of modern languages is an indispensable part of education and as such the learning of languages is a very important part of the curriculum at Finborough.

Students study French and Spanish as this gives them a greater understanding of how languages work, which tenses are which and how to use and manipulate verbs and vocabulary through the constant reinforcement of learning the same techniques across two languages.  Pupils are set according to ability and prior learning experience.

A wide variety of topics are studied in both languages in a fun and interactive way.  Topics covered inter alia are family, free time, food and drink, school, health, leisure and holidays.

At GSCE level, students can study French and/or Spanish or neither.  In Year 10 and Year 11 students continue to develop the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.

At the end of their GCSE course students should be able to communicate effectively in the situations they are most likely to encounter when visiting or having contact with a foreign country. They will also be well-prepared to begin AS level should they wish to continue with language studies in the Sixth Form.

To support their studies, older students have the opportunity to opt for the French and/or Spanish enrichment club(s) on a weekly basis.  Even more exciting, pupils can participate in overseas trips to practise their language skills and experience culture first hand.  Our recent trips to France have included a trip to the First World War battlefield and, on another occasion, Paris and all its wonders.  For our Spanish students, a trip to the amazing city of Seville and surrounding areas. More wonderful trips are planned!
