Results & Leaver’s Destinations
At Finborough School, we take great pride in the achievements of our Sixth Form students. Each year, our leavers secure strong academic results and progress to a wide range of exciting destinations, from top universities and competitive apprenticeships to alternative career pathways. With personalised guidance and a focus on individual ambition, our students leave Finborough ready to thrive in the next stage of their journey.
Most pupils take either nine or 10 GCSEs, and in the sixth form there is also a wide choice of subjects for both A-levels and BTECs. Most head off to university after Year 13, with a small number taking up degree apprenticeships or going straight into a job.
Talk Education Review, 2025
While many of our Sixth Form students progress to university, we are equally proud of those who pursue alternative routes. From competitive degree apprenticeships and professional sports contracts to gap years and elite academic pathways, our tailored support ensures every student finds the right next step. Below are some of the diverse destinations and opportunities our students embrace after leaving Finborough.
Medicine and Top Universities
Around 75% of our students head to university straight from Year 13. Some of our top destinations over the past three years include:
- Law at Durham University
- Medicine at University of East Anglia
- Engineering at University College London
- Physics at Manchester University
- Economics at Warwick University
- English Literature at University of Nottingham
- Biochemistry at University of Sheffield
Each year, our students also receive scholarships to play rugby at Exeter University, Brunel University as well as professional contracts at Northampton Saints and Exeter.
Oxbridge and Medicine Applications
Applications to medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, and Oxbridge require a high level of preparation. Mr Clark leads this process, working closely with students from early in Year 12. Bespoke tutorials, seminars, and interview practice with both staff and external professionals ensure our students are well-prepared and confident when applying to these highly selective institutions.
Degree Apprenticeships
Each year, a number of our students successfully secure places on highly competitive degree apprenticeships. These programmes require rigorous application processes, including online assessments, group tasks, and multiple interviews. We provide personalised support throughout, including practice interviews and application guidance. Students interested in this route are encouraged to begin researching opportunities in the summer term of Year 12, subscribing to company newsletters and monitoring application deadlines. As each scheme varies, early preparation is key. We also advise students to apply through UCAS as a backup option.
Sports Scholarships and Professional Contracts
Of our Year 13 students approximately 6% are offered a sports scholarship at a top university or sign a professional contract. Our experienced coaching team works closely with students, families, and external coaches to identify the best pathways. The process begins in Year 12 with an introductory talk on scholarships and contracts, followed by ongoing, individualised support.
Gap Years
Each year, around 10% of our students choose to take a gap year, either to gain experience travelling and working a ski season or to gain employment while applying for an apprenticeship. Some defer university entry, while others use the time to apply for apprenticeships. Even after students leave, we continue to offer support with personal statements, applications, and interview preparation.
