Approach to Learning in Prep

At Finborough Prep, one of the leading Prep Schools in Suffolk, we offer more than just a strong academic education — we offer a deeply considered, character-centred experience that sets our pupils up for life.

What truly distinguishes us from other schools is our whole-child approach, where as much emphasis is placed on developing character and self-awareness as is placed on academic achievement. While our pupils achieve excellent academic outcomes, they do so within a culture that continually nurtures compassion, confidence, empathy and resilience — traits that will serve them far beyond their school years.

At the heart of this is our commitment to character education, seamlessly woven into every part of school life. Through daily interactions, assemblies, leadership roles, co-curricular activities and the wider curriculum, children are constantly encouraged to reflect on who they are, how they interact with the world around them and how they can grow into the best versions of themselves.

Our approach also places a strong emphasis on metacognition — teaching pupils to think about their own thinking. Over time, they develop strategies to manage their learning, understand how they learn best and become independent, self-motivated learners. These essential life skills give our pupils an incredible advantage, allowing them to navigate challenges with clarity and approach opportunities with focus and purpose.

While many schools talk about values, we live them — in the way our pupils treat one another, in how they lead their learning and in how they step confidently into the wider world. The result is a school community where academic excellence grows alongside emotional intelligence and where every child feels seen, supported and inspired.

Finborough Prep doesn’t just prepare children for Senior School — we prepare them for life.

‘Better Never Stops’ – Prep School Aims and Beliefs

Our belief that ‘Better Never Stops’ is encapsulated in our aim to ensure that all pupils enjoy their learning, so that they make excellent progress and become confident and mature young people. The foundation of Learnability to underpin the curriculum supports our children during lessons, and helps to give them the skills to become effective learners. The use of Learnability in the classroom is common place: children as young as five use the same language as adults to describe the learning that is happening. Whilst Learnability supports the learning habits we aspire to, Stephen Covey’s seven habits give our pupils the ability to become interdependent young people, ready to support and help their peers. It is wonderful to hear young children in classrooms, and outside at play, discussing ‘emotional bank accounts’ and dealing with minor disputes by listening and discussing.
