Nursery: Approach to Learning
What will my child be learning at Finborough Nursery?
We create an environment that meets the needs of each individual child and is continually adapted to support their individual development. Our continuous provision is carefully planned through regular discussions about the children’s interests and progress. Both play based learning and adult led teaching are valued as part of our approach. Our planning allows adults to weave teaching objectives into play where children are most engaged, and to identify next steps through ongoing observation and assessment. We also use in the moment planning to respond to child’s ideas and interests during child-initiated play.
Curriculum and the Early Years Foundation Stage
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets the standards that all early years’ educators must meet to ensure that children learn and develop well and are kept healthy and safe. It promotes teaching and learning to ensure that each child has a broad range of knowledge and skills that provide the right foundation for good future progress through school and life.
The Early Years Foundation Stage is a legal framework which all early years providers, working with children from birth to five, must use to ensure they meet the needs of the youngest children in their care. In Nursery, we use the Early Years Foundation Stage Guidance to help us look at our learning environment, our curriculum and how we help and support all children to achieve the very best they can.
The EYFS also lays out a set of outcomes that children should achieve by the end of their time in the EYFS (in this case at the end of their Reception year/first term of prep 1). It helps us make sure we are thinking about all aspects of children’s learning and development, and divides learning into 7 distinct but integrated areas.

Outdoor Learning
We believe outdoor play is an essential part of every child’s learning journey and we embrace it in all weathers from the moment they join our nursery. Whether it’s forest school sessions, welly walks or simply exploring our wonderful outdoor spaces the children will have opportunities to connect with nature. They will learn how to care for the world around them, notice season change and experience the joy of fresh air and open space.
By encouraging children to explore and enjoy the natural world, we can help them develop curiosity, resilience and a deep respect for our planet.
