Prep School

ISA Independent Junior School of the Year, 2024

At Finborough, we don’t see Prep and Senior as separate schools — we are one school, one community and that philosophy underpins everything we do. From the moment your child joins us in the Prep School, they are being thoughtfully and gradually prepared for the next stage of their educational journey.

Throughout their time in Prep, children inhabit and engage with the Senior School environment in meaningful and age-appropriate ways. For example, Science lessons frequently take place in the Senior School’s well-equipped laboratories, giving pupils early access to specialist facilities and hands-on experimentation that brings their learning to life. Similarly, all Music, Drama and Art lessons are taught by subject specialists in our state-of-the-art creative spaces, giving Prep pupils the opportunity to develop their talents in professional settings.

Our Approach to Learning

The 7 habits are the bedrock behind pupil growth at Finborough. With everyone using the same language it empowers pupils to take ownership of their learning and behaviour; learning to both understand themselves and others. The 7 habits help build self-discovery, confidence, teamwork and responsibility from a young age which stems across the age ranges in Prep and beyond. These habits create a positive, respectful environment where every child can thrive academically, socially and emotionally.

“Pupils are happy and engaged, throwing themselves into academics, sport and the creative arts with equal passion. On our visit, they were bubbling over to tell us how well the teachers treat them. And it’s this that feels like the school’s hidden superpower.”

Preparation for Senior School and Beyond

Our whole-school structure also allows for collaboration across year groups and phases, creating a strong sense of continuity and community. Senior students regularly read with Prep children, while our older Prep pupils lead activities with Pre-Prep, building confidence, empathy and leadership. These purposeful interactions help pupils see themselves as part of a larger learning journey, making the eventual transition to Senior School feel natural and familiar.

We also operate a comprehensive assessment system throughout the Prep years. These assessments are used not simply to measure attainment, but to identify areas of strength, diagnose where additional support may be needed and tailor stretch opportunities for those ready to be challenged further. The data we gather from these assessments is used to guide individual learning plans and directly informs the transition to Senior School, ensuring that no time is lost and every pupil moves forward with confidence.

When the time comes to formally step into Year 7, the transition is seamless. Children already know the staff, the spaces and the routines — and they’ve been developing the independence and skills needed for success in Senior School throughout their Prep experience.

For parents, we offer clear communication and personalised support. Whether it’s through individual meetings, parent briefings or ongoing discussions, we work closely with families to ensure that every child’s move to Senior is smooth, well-understood and exciting. You won’t need to apply for a separate school — your child is already part of the Finborough Senior School family.

At Finborough, progression is not a leap — it’s a steady, supported stride forward on a path your child already knows and feels confident walking.
